This Cunard Regular Puts Their Brand-New Ship To The Test
I believe I can bring a unique take on Cunard's new Queen Anne as I’ve been on 23 Cunard cruises and spent 210 nights across all their fleet, including most recently 14 nights on board Queen Anne, which gave me ample time to fully test out their latest cruise ship. I was keen to discover if, as some believe, Cunard is trying to chase people like me away from Cunard with their new ship and replace me with new and younger cruisers, or whether they're just trying to offer another ship for me as a regular Cunard cruiser to experience.

9 Things You Can Take From A Cruise Without Getting Into Trouble
Просмотров 48 тыс.14 дней назад
What can you take home from your cruise without any fear you're doing the wrong thing, either morally or legally? This question hit me while I was packing at the end of a recent Cunard Queen Anne Cruise, as in the disembarkation letter a section was highlighted with a list of items that I was not allowed to take home, warning that if I did there would be penalties. I did a double take, as it in...
9 Reasons More Cruisers Than Ever Are Denied Boarding
Просмотров 650 тыс.21 день назад
As all the passengers you will hear about discovered, being denied boarding for a cruise, not only turned their dream vacation into complete disarray, but lost them a fortune as cruise lines do not refund guests who they deny boarding to, arguing it's up to us as passengers to pay close attention to any rules and requirements, whether it's the cruise lines or the countries being called upon. Af...
5 Sure Fire Ways To Get A Cruise Cabin Upgrade in 2024

With ships sailing full, and all the major cruise lines saying that on average they're sailing at 104% capacity, the techniques that I used to use and spoke about in the past, even as recently as this video from two years ago, to get cruise cabin upgrades no longer work. But after some rethinking, I’ve successfully cracked how to still get upgrades today. I know you can score upgrades like I ha...
Not Telling Your Cruise Line These 6 Things Could Sink Your Cruise!

I was driven to make this after I saw a series of issues blow up on cruise ships after people did not come clean with their cruise line, sometimes intentionally but more often because they hadn’t realised they needed to. The consequences of some were so severe that I’ve seen cruisers banned for life, refused embarkation, or being kicked off their ship during the cruise. In this video I help you...
3 Issues Driving Holland America Cruisers Crazy This Year

I recently embarked on Holland America Eurodam to host one of my group cruises with some trepidation, because I'd had past fans of Holland America telling me they were falling out of love with the line, based on three recent changes. So, I felt this would be the perfect opportunity to put these to the test, as I could tap into the thoughts of everyone on my group cruise. And, based on what we d...
Dangerous Cruise Ports To Stay Far, Far Away From (2024)

Experiences on my two last cruises reminded me that just because my cruise ship is calling into a port does not mean that I can assume it's safe for me to get off and explore. In fact, even in the two most popular cruising regions, the Caribbean and Mediterranean, many of the most visited ports are amongst the riskiest. Welcome aboard, I'm Gary Bembridge and I’m going to tell you what dangerous...

The Indian Pacific is one of the famous and costliest train journeys in the world travelling 2,700 miles (4,352 kilometres) between Sydney and Perth Australia. Very interesting and informative, thank you Gary. We’re doing Japan in October with HAL, 10 stops, not including a few nights in Tokyo. We’ve booked ship excursions for four of them (costing over £1,000 for the two of us and they’re not long tours) and planning to do our own thing for the rest. It’s good to hear you saying that it’s so easy to get around on our own. Our S Korea stop is Sokcho.

It's funny to me though that the Norwegian cruise line (that is, Viking, not NCL), has an evening lecture about culture as a nation building exercise (@6:24), when every Norwegian who paid attention during Norwegian lessons in school knows a lot about this, due to the various nation building artists that are revered, and the whole culrural period called "National Romanticism". The real question is whether this is good, bad, or just a morally neutral thing societies and nations have to do to stick and function as a society. If a society is to an extent defined by the stories we tell ourselves, is it wrong for us as a society to take a more active part in what stories we wish to tell? How do we deal with people wanting to tell different stories, or the same stories but in different ways? It's an interesting question, and I do not think there are easy answers.

I suspect that for Viking's target audience, Viking is absolutely incredible. But Viking's target audience isn't the whole world. They have 8 oceangoing ships that take less than 1000 people each? But if there's enough people who want that, and see the price as reasonable for what's on offer, then there's nothing wrong with that. They don't need hundreds of thousands of people clamoring to go there. It's all about finding that market that wants your product and directing your attention to them.

Unless you're actually allergic to milk protein, which few people actually are, you're simply intolerant to lactose. So instead of making the crew's life miserable, just pack a lot of easy disolve lactase pills. It be USA it is called lactaid, in Europe it has different names. It can be taken without causing negative effects, and if taken correctly, in the correct amount during or right before a meal (but never on an otherwise empty stomach), it allows you to consume dairy without the negative consequences. If you are allergic to milk protein on the other hand, you should not work with antihistamines. The effects of an actual milk allergy are flushed face, red eyes, clogged Mayboom glands.

I have to very strongly disagree with you with the Wi-Fi. The point of a cruise to me is to absolutely let the outside world melt away and forget all outside troubles. It's impossible to let the whole experience take you over with that damn thing vibrating constantly and the addiction of the internet stealing your attention. Forget about the outside world and live your life right now in the moment. Only the ship's app and its chat feature for others in your group on the ship. Maybe look something up on Wi-Fi at a business at port, but paying for the whole time is ridiculous.

I thought this was obvious? River cruises in Europe are like the old "If it's Tuesday, this must be..." tours than anything else. The advantage, of course, is that you don't have to pack and unpack every day since your room moves with you. Not sure why anyone would expect anything different.

I had a Mexican Riviera cruise completely changed to a California coastal cruise 48 hours before departure, due to swine flu. I canceled and managed to convince Visa to refund the cost. The cruise line wanted their money back from me and sent the debt to a collection agency. The agent called me once, I explained the situation and they never bothered me again. TL;DR California is NOT Mexico. 😉

I think you need to be more well often you think to do this full-time. I would not be a verse to it, however, there are times such as during a refurbishment you cannot be on the ship. Jumping from ship to ship with just a few suitcases sounds very untethered. No way in heck I would want to stay in the Caribbean, I’ve done eastern, western & southern several times that’s enough. I really think that you need to be prepared to have a fall back. Issues such as health are an example. You can’t manage your health on a cruise ship. You have to have a very well thought out plan about having a homebase to fall back on for access to healthcare, social network, worst case scenario the cruise line goes bankrupt.

My wife and I just returned from a 10 Alaska run with QE2. Overall, great value and Gary, thanks for your insights. The last time I'd been on the QE was 1963, so I was intrigued to see how things have developed over this long interlude. The ship itself was great especially the art deco throughout. The 10 day itinerary for Alaska was the best we've experienced (previously 7 days on Princess). We were the last two to book a cabin on a full ship with only an interior available. Kudos to Cunard for upgrading us to restricted view. Dress code - right on Gary, but resisting the tide of the Walmart/Target set has/is no doubt a reality. My biggest let down was the dining experience at Britannia restaurant. We were not used to food order first with a haphazard wine steward availability next for drinks. As well, dinner by the staff came across as a rushed affair to get us in, served and get us out. Finally, on more some occasions, we found the dinner serving staff less than friendly (more focused on getting the order done) and on a couple of occasions somewhat surly. We do not want to lessen those who were professional and accommodating. But this was the biggest letdown from 1963. Otherwise the overall experience and value was good except the food itself was no contest to Celebrity.

I agree with you, the overall design is a huge disappointment. She looks just like a slightly larger Victoria or Elizabeth with rabbit hutches on top. She is a very ugly, unbalanaced looking ship. Seeing what is being done by the non-Carnival lines, like them or not, the designs are modern and radical. Very sad.

Cunard is stuck with a dilemma .. go too modern and contemporary they alienate their existing customer base, stay too much the same and they will not attract new customers. I'm afraid with the modern demographic the Cunard brand heritage means nothing so they really do need to take the bull by the horns and modernise not just the ships but the company as well.

We've just returned from the QA trip after yours (down in the Med, where the sundecks were heavily used) and think you've given a very fair & balanced review of the new ship. A couple of observations: Most of the passengers seemed to be long term Cunarders (and also in the older age bracket. I'm early 60s and was definitely in the younger demographic on this cruise). I think the proof of the pudding will come in maybe 6 months time when Cunard will be hoping to attract new customers (either from other lines or new to cruising altogether) to fill the Winter & Spring sailings. Cunard have to tread a very fine line in offering the new innovations to attract those new customers (the Bright Lights cabaret venue and the Wellness café are two of the new features I think worked very well) but also keeping enough of the Cunard traditional things that are really their USP. For example the dressing up on the Formal evenings (and indeed the overall smartness of passengers on all the other evenings) is the one thing that separates Cunard from all the other lines and is widely appreciated by most of their clientele. Secondly. Even though I thought the decor & design in general was good,, I think that the overall passenger flow of the ship could have been better implemented. I know you were in Grills, but for us lowly Britannia passengers, getting from one end of the ship to the other on the upper decks (without sneaking through the Grill Terrace ) was a real trek (involving dropping down a couple of decks and coming back up). The cabins (and especially the bathrooms) are a step up from the other Queens, but as mentioned elsewhere, the wardrobe space has been decreased (and with no drawers except in the bedside cabinets) and why won't Cunard trust it's customers (who've paid thousands to sail) not to pinch the coat hangers! QM2 is still our favourite, but wouldn't dismiss another trip on Queen Anne if the itinerary (and price) was right.

Thanks for watching and your thoughts and experience. Yes, but was very confusing people trying to find way around and get to places with the Grills deck blocking the way. I agree going to be interesting to see how this shakes up. I did hear a podcast interview with the Cunard sales person saying they are seeing a very high number of new to Cunard booking Queen Anne.... And will they want the Cunard experience or not!?
